How to Create and Manage Custom Hourly Rates in Lawcus

Learn how to create and apply custom hourly rates in Lawcus using Billing Settings and matter/client-level rates.

Written by Devanshi Kackar

Lawcus allows you to create custom hourly rates to support different billing workflows across your firm. Rates can be configured at the Billing Settings, Matter, or Client level and assigned to individual users.

Below are the three ways to create and manage custom hourly rates in Lawcus.

Method 1: Create a Custom Hourly Rate from Billing Settings

Use this method if you would like to create reusable hourly rate templates that can later be applied to matters.

Steps:

  1. Click your Avatar in the top-right corner.

  2. Navigate to Settings.

  3. Open Bill Settings.

  4. Select Custom Hourly Rate.

  5. Click New Rate on the top-right side.

  6. Enter a Rate Name (for example: Matter Rate or Client Rate).

  7. Add users and assign their individual hourly rates.

  8. Save the configuration.

You can also return to this screen at any time to edit existing custom hourly rates.

Method 2: Create a Matter-Level Custom Hourly Rate

Use this method if you want to apply a unique billing rate to one specific matter.

Steps:

  1. Navigate to the Matters tab from the left panel.

  2. Open the matter where you want to create the custom rate.

  3. Click Edit Matter or select the pencil icon in the upper-right corner.

  4. Navigate to Billing Preference.

  5. Ensure the Billing Type is set to Hourly.

  6. You will now see the option to:

    • Add a Custom Rate, or

    • Use a Rate Template created under Billing Settings.

  7. Configure the rates and save your changes.

Note: If the matter is set to Flat Rate, you can still create a custom rate manually if needed; however, hourly rate templates created in Billing Settings cannot be applied to flat-rate matters.

Method 3: Create a Client-Level Hourly or Fixed Rate

Use client-level rates when you want the same billing structure to apply across all matters associated with a client.

Steps:

  1. Navigate to Clients.

  2. Open the desired client profile.

  3. Scroll down to Billing Preference.

  4. Enable the Client Rate toggle.

  5. Add:

    • A Custom Individual Rate, or

    • A Fixed Rate for all timekeepers.
