Written by Devanshi Kackar

Lawcus lets you manage Billing Preferences at the Matter level, giving you control over how each Matter is billed. You can configure settings such as the estimated Matter value, billing type, retainer, currency, billing rate, invoice template, and billing instructions.

How to Access Matter Billing Preferences

To manage the billing preferences for a matter:

  1. Navigate to Matters.

  2. Click on the Matter Name you want to update.

  3. Click Edit Matter.

  4. Scroll down to the Billing Preferences section.

Lawcus provides the following billing preferences that you can configure for each Matter.

Estimated Matter Value

Estimated Matter Value is the approximate monetary value associated with a matter. It helps firms track the potential financial value of their matters for planning and reporting purposes.

Billing Type

Here you can also select the appropriate Billing Type for the matter, such as:

  • Hourly

  • Flat Fee

  • Non-Billable

  • Contingency Fee

Evergreen Retainer

If you use an Evergreen Retainer for the matter, you can enable this option and specify the desired retainer amount.

Once the retainer balance reaches or exceeds the specified threshold, Lawcus will highlight the amount in red to indicate it requires attention.

To enable this feature, select the Evergreen Retainer checkbox and enter the desired amount.

Custom Billing Rate

You can set a custom billing rate specifically for the Matter.

Choose either:

  • Custom Rate to enter a Matter-specific rate.

  • An existing Rate Template to apply a predefined billing rate.

Currency

Lawcus allows you to define the currency at the matter level. This is useful if your firm handles matters that need to be billed in different currencies.

You can select the appropriate currency for each matter based on your billing requirements.

Invoice Template

Here, you can select the invoice template you want to use for the specific matter. You can choose the default template or any other template based on the matter’s billing requirements.
For more information, see How to Create and Customize Invoice Templates in Lawcus.

Billing Instructions

The Billing Instructions field allows you to add matter-specific billing information for the responsible team members and originating attorney.

You can include relevant details such as:

  • Billing terms

  • Billing type

  • Payment terms

  • Special billing requirements

  • Any other instructions that should be considered when billing the matter

Adding clear billing instructions helps ensure that everyone involved in the matter follows the correct billing requirements.
