Getting Started with Lawcus: A Guide for Lawcus Onboarding

It is built on a secure cloud-based platform, ensuring your data is always safe and accessible. This guide will take you through the steps to get started with Lawcus and maximize its features.

Tip: We recommend completing the setup steps in the order below before adding a large amount of live data. This will help ensure that your account is organized and ready for your team's day-to-day work.


Get Familiar with Lawcus

Before setting up your account, take a few minutes to explore the Lawcus interface.

The main navigation gives you access to the areas you will use most frequently:

  • Dashboard – Get an overview of your firm's activity and important information.

  • Contacts – Manage clients and other contacts.

  • Leads – Track prospective clients and manage your intake process.

  • Matters – Manage your cases and matter-related information.

  • Tasks – Create, assign, and track work.

  • Calendar – Manage events, meetings, and appointments.

  • Activities – Track time, expenses, and other activities.

  • Invoices – Create and manage invoices and billing records.

  • Accounts – Manage financial accounts and transactions.

  • Reports – Access reports and insights from your Lawcus data.

  • Workflows – Automate repetitive processes.

Quick-Access Tools

You can also use:

  • + Add – Quickly create contacts, leads, matters, tasks, events, activities, invoices, and other records.

  • Search – Quickly find records and information across Lawcus.

  • Timer – Record time while you work.

  • Notifications – Stay updated on important activity.

  • Chat – Contact the Lawcus Support team when you need assistance.

Your Avatar menu gives you access to your profile, settings, organization management, integrations, subscription, and Help Center.


Set Up Your Firm

Once you are familiar with the workspace, start by configuring your firm's basic information.

To configure your firm information, go to:

Avatar > Settings > Firm Settings > Company Info

Add your firm's basic information, including:

  • Firm name

  • Firm logo

  • Contact information

  • Other relevant company details

  • Language

  • Currency

  • Date format

  • Naming preferences

Your firm information may be used throughout Lawcus, including in areas such as communications and billing. These settings help ensure Lawcus is configured to match how your firm operates.


Customize Lawcus to Match Your Firm

Customize Lawcus to match your firm's processes. Focus on the settings your team needs most, such as:

  • Custom Fields – Capture additional Contact and Matter information.

  • Practice Areas – Organize matters and workflows by practice area.

  • Tags – Organize and filter records.

  • Relation Types – Define relationships between contacts and matters.

  • Matter Locations – Add relevant matter locations.

  • Activity Categories – Organize time and expense entries.

  • Document Templates – Create documents using your firm's templates.

  • Client Portal – Configure the portal for client communication and collaboration.

Tip: Start with the essentials and add more customizations as your team gets familiar with Lawcus.

Complete Your Personal Profile

Each team member should review their personal settings before getting started.

Go to:

Avatar > Settings > Profile Settings

Depending on your account, you may be able to configure:

  • Name and email address

  • Time zone

  • Password

  • Email signature

  • Notification preferences

  • Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

  • Practice rate and target


Configure Your Billing Settings

If your firm uses Lawcus for time tracking and invoicing, configure your billing settings before creating your first invoice.

Go to:

Avatar > Settings > Billing Settings

Review the settings relevant to your firm, including:
Depending on your account, you may be able to configure:

  • Activity Settings

  • UTBMS Codes

  • Custom Hourly Rates

  • Taxes

  • Invoice Templates

  • Invoice Workflow


Set Up Your Team and Permissions

Once your firm's basic settings are ready, invite your teammates to Lawcus.

Go to: Avatar > Manage Your Organization

From here, administrators can:

  • Invite team members

  • Assign roles

  • Configure permissions

  • Create user groups

  • Add job titles

  • Manage user access


Set Up Your Matter Pipelines

Pipelines help you organize matters and visualize where each matter is in your firm's process.

You can create different pipelines for different practice areas and add stages that represent each step in your process.

For example:

Personal Injury

New Lead → Consultation → Retained → Discovery → Settlement → Closed

Family Law

New Lead → Consultation → Retained → Filing → Hearing → Closed


Connect Your Integrations

Integrations allow Lawcus to work alongside the other tools your firm uses.

Go to:

Avatar > Settings > Apps & Integrations

Review the available integrations and connect only the services your firm needs.

Common integration categories include:

Tip: After connecting an integration, run a quick test to make sure the connection and synchronization work as expected.


Import Your Existing Data

If you are moving to Lawcus from another system, you can import your existing data using the available import options.

Start Using the Core Lawcus Features

Once your account is configured, you're ready to start working in Lawcus.

You do not need to learn every feature at once. Start with the areas your team uses most frequently.


Contacts
​Store and manage client and professional contact information.


Leads

Track prospective clients from initial inquiry through the intake process.


Matters

Keep your case information, activities, tasks, documents, and related records organized in one place.


Tasks

Create, assign, and track work across your team.


Calendar & Events

Schedule and manage meetings, appointments, deadlines, and other events.

Create and manage invoices and billing-related records.


Accounts

Manage supported financial and trust-related transactions.


Workflows

Automate repetitive processes and keep your firm's workflows consistent.


Once your essential settings are configured and your setup has been tested, your team is ready to start using Lawcus.


You can continue customizing Lawcus as your firm becomes more familiar with the platform. There is no need to configure every feature on day one.
