How to Configure the Matter Created Workflow Trigger

Learn how to configure the Matter Created trigger to automatically run workflows for new matters.

Written by Devanshi Kackar

The Matter Created trigger automatically starts a workflow when a new matter is created in Lawcus. Use it to automate actions such as assigning team members, sending follow-up emails, creating tasks, or starting other processes when a matter is added.

Configure the Matter Created Trigger

When creating a workflow, the first step is to choose a trigger.

Under Step 1 – Setup Trigger Type, click the Select trigger dropdown and choose Matter Created.

Matter CreatedThe workflow will begin once a new matter is created and saved.

After selecting the trigger, click Continue to configure when the workflow should run.

Configure the Workflow Setup

In Step 2 – Setup, you can control which newly created matters will initiate the workflow by selecting a Pipeline and Stage.

Run the Workflow for All Matters

If you leave both the Pipeline and Stage fields blank, the workflow will run whenever any new matter is created, regardless of its pipeline or stage.

This is the best option when you want the automation to apply firm-wide.

Run the Workflow for a Specific Pipeline

If you select a Pipeline but leave the Stage field blank, the workflow will run for every new matter created within that pipeline.

For example, selecting the Family Law pipeline ensures that the workflow runs for all newly created Family Law matters, regardless of the stage they are created in.

Run the Workflow for a Specific Pipeline and Stage

If you select both a Pipeline and a Stage, the workflow will only run when a matter is created directly in that stage of the selected pipeline.

For example, if you select the Family Law pipeline and the Case Assessment stage, the workflow will only execute when a matter is created in the Case Assessment stage of the Family Law pipeline.

Add Entry Rules

You can further control when the workflow runs by expanding Entry Rules.

Entry Rules let you add conditions that a matter must meet before the workflow executes. You can use criteria such as custom fields, tags, and other matter attributes to make your automation more specific.

For detailed instructions, see Entry Rules in Lawcus.

Summary

The Matter Created trigger starts a workflow when a new matter is created and saved. You can run it for all matters, limit it to a specific pipeline, or narrow it to a specific pipeline and stage. Use Entry Rules when you need additional conditions to control which matters trigger the workflow.
